TGV Timber

What Is Fire Retardant Timber?

Fire retardant timber is timber that has been specially treated to resist ignition and slow the spread of flame. Through fire retardant treatment for timber, BURNBLOCK® is driven deep into the timber's cellular structure using vacuum pressure impregnation, creating fire-resistant material that performs far more effectively than untreated alternatives.

The treatment is completely invisible and leaves no residue or staining, so your timber is ready for finishing, coating, or painting without limitation.

How Does Fire Rated Timber Work?

When exposed to heat, the treated surface chars and releases water, absorbing thermal energy and preventing oxygen from reaching the timber. Without oxygen, there is no fire. The timber still chars, but does so in a controlled manner rather than contributing to flame spread as untreated timber would. This provides valuable extra time for safe evacuation should a fire break out, along with reduced damage to the building.

Fire Resistant Timber Classifications

Fire-treated timber is classified according to performance standards that determine its suitability for different applications. In the UK and Europe, the EN 13501-1 standard applies, with Euroclass B-s1,d0 representing a high level of fire performance.

What Does Euroclass B-s1,d0 Mean?

This classification indicates limited contribution to fire spread (B), minimal smoke production (s1), and no flaming droplets (d0).
