Treatments:
Impregnation vs Surface Coatings

When it comes to fire protection for timber, choosing the right treatment method is crucial, not just for safety but for long term performance and sustainability. At HALT, we believe in solutions that go beyond the surface. Let’s explore the two most common fire retardant treatments: Pressure Impregnation and Surface Coatings

Surface Coatings

Surface Coatings are applied directly onto the timber, often on site. These include:
• Clear varnishes
• Emulsion paints
• Matt or gloss oil-bound paints

They’re typically easy to apply and cost effective, with minimal impact on the timber’s appearance. Because they can be applied on location, they reduce the need for additional transport or logistics.

However, surface coatings only protect the outer layer of the timber. This makes them vulnerable to:
• Moisture damage
• Wear and tear from handling
• Inconsistencies in application
• Loss of protection if the timber is cut, sanded or drilled

Pressure Impregnation

Pressure Impregnation is an industrial process that uses a vacuum and pressure to force fire retardant deep into the timber’s structure. This method is known as a homogenous, through and through process, altering the cell structure of the timber and providing consistent protection throughout. This means the timber can be cut, sanded or drilled after treatment without compromising on fire protection.

Why HALT Chooses Pressure Impregnation

At HALT, we exclusively use pressure impregnation with Burnblock ®, a 100% natural, biodegradable and non-toxic fire retardant. Burnblock ® is a water based solution, meaning it has no impact on the timbers physical appearance after treatment.

All timber treated at HALT achieves a Euroclass rating of B-s1,d0 – the highest possible rating for fire retardant timber.

The Verdict

While surface coatings offer convenience, they fall short in durability and consistency. Pressure impregnation, especially with Burnblock®, provides deep, lasting protection that stands up to real world use, without compromising on sustainability or aesthetics.

It’s a no brainer. Choose HALT. Choose long term protection.
